Scientific divers from across Australia have travelled to Cairns for the first course of this kind offered through the cooperation of TAFE QLD and The Underwater Centre Tasmania, a fully accredited Diver Training Establishment (DTE) under the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS)
A total of 10 divers from as far afield as Western Australia and Tasmania are undertaking a nationally recognized two week commercial scientific dive course.
The participating divers conduct high end underwater scientific research for private sector companies and research organizations.
They will complete the ADAS accredited training course, part 1 restricted, at various locations around Cairns learning various aspects of occupational diving including rescues, communications procedures, dive planning and risk assessments.
Tropical North Queensland TAFE institute director Joann Pyne said the institute was proud to work in partnership with The Underwater Centre Tasmania to offer this training locally in Cairns.
“We worked collaboratively with The Underwater Centre Tasmania over the last two years to deliver a Queensland wide seafood industry dive training programme and this new venture is extending the successful partnership.
I’m looking forward to building on the strengths of this partnership to establish Cairns and the far North as a national and potentially International dive training venue.
The Underwater Centre Tasmania CEO, Mr Stephen Clark said “The Underwater Centre Tasmania has been delivering occupational diver training in Australia and internationally for 15 years. Our clients come from all over the world to achieve the ADAS accreditation through our training facility in Tasmania and we hope to see the same outcome with the new facility in Queensland.”
Enrolments are now open for at the next course, ADAS restricted part 1 and ADAS full part 1, due to commence on 5th October 2009 with additional course dates to be announced in the near future.
