THE COURSE PREREQUISITES:
- Hold a current AS2815.2 or equivalent (as a minimum)
- Hold a current AS2299.1 or HSE diving medical certificate
- Hold a current recognised first aid certificate
- Some welding experience is desirable but not essential
SUBJECTS COVERED
Welding safety, Surface welding procedures, underwater welding plant and procedures, Electrode identification and selection.
This is basically a practical course that is designed to allow the student to practice wet welding to such a level that he can complete a welding code. The code used is AWS 3.6. In this code there are 3 standards, A, B & C. C is the lowest level and is designed for non-critical non-load bearing welds. B is the intermediate level and A is designed for critical load bearing welds. Each student will undergo a final test. There will be a written exam on welding safety and a third party testing body utilised for the practical assessment.
The course starts on the surface with lectures on the theoretical aspects of welding. The students then move into the surface bays and start practicing surface welding. As soon as possible and no later than the third day, the student will move into diving mode and start practicing underwater welding in the customised welding tank. This diver will practice underwater welding for the rest of the course. However the surface bays are there for all candidates to practicing their surface welding techniques.
The course aims to give the diver at least 10 hours underwater welding practice before putting him forward to complete a test piece. The 10 hours is a minimum and in many cases the candidates receive many more hours’ tuition in the tank throughout their course.
Please Note: We recommend that you bring your own welding jacket, helmet and gloves with you when you come for the course. If you do not have these items, please advise as they are provided as part of the standard course. Most candidates however, prefer to own / use their own personal welding gear and we will have these items for sale should you wish to purchase them.
